The first national network of indigenous people in Congo

During 3 days, from 08 au 10 August 2007, the general assembly of the National Network of Indigenous people was hold in Brazzaville, Congo with funding of UNICEF.

Delegates included indigenous people and civil society organisations members. The main objective was to strengthen the leadership of indigenous people by creating a network of organizations and building capacities of its leaders. During the workshop, delegates also celebrated the World day of indigenous people on 09 August 2007.

An executive board of six members and a board of directors of seven members have been elected. Indigenous people are fairly represented in these boards, but not indigenous women! .

A TV programme has been organised to present the network and discuss about its plans eau. This network is an initiative that will bring more voices of indigenous people in the decision making processes. AZUR Development has been activelmy involved in this process.

Our partner, Jean Nganga from the Association pour la défense et la promotion des peuples autochtones (ADPPA) was elected as General Secretary of the network.

This is a concrete contribution of advocacy efforts made by AZUR on indigenous women and children rights in the country since end of 2006.

The fight is still hard, but indigenous people are on the way to freedom and empowerment.
